Tori

Is located in the southwest of Georgia, in the resort zone of Borjomi-Bakuriani), 1600 m above the sea level, at about 15km from the famous resort Bakuriani.

Tori was the residence of Samzkhe-Javakheti rulers in the middle centuries. Afterwards it lost the function of administrative center and though the rulers have reserved their title –Toreli, it became the resort place for the Russian Kings and their families. In 1945 the residents were forced to settle down in the plain, their houses were destroyed that they couldn’t return back.

All these years the people tried hard to return to their native places and only 3 years ago 12 families got the permission. The photos represent the very moments when the first houses were built in Tori. As no agriculture worked here for the last half of the century, it’s obvious that chemicals couldn’t be used. Vast plains and subtropical climate gives opportunities for creating medical plant economy. There are good conditions for cattle breeding.

Beautiful landscape that is not touched even by the researchers, ancient buildings located in dark woods, unique flora and fauna are remarkable bases for tourism development.

Shatili

Shatili community is located in Georgia, in the mountain area that is called Beyond Khevsureti. It’s at 1400 m above the sea level, at 160 km from Tbilisi.

Shatili is a masterpiece of the medieval century town building. One can feel the indivisibility of the architectural planning methods and social organizing of the castle-village.

The architects and restorers began their first expedition in Shatili in 1967. Some years were spent on studying and projecting. The restoration started in 1972. Projecting ‘New Shatili’ was going on simultaneously. In 1970 Shatili was declared a reserve and in 1979 a branch of the Georgian Museum. In 1999 the Georgian Cultural Heritage Foundation considered it the first rate priority. The concept of Shatili development was elaborated that pays much attention to the restoration of the region together with its social-economic development and the participation of the community in it.

The residents of Shatili reserved their traditions on the plain – in 2000 ‘Pekhoni’ - a community organization of tower-owners - was established. It participates in the restoration process. These activities will continue on self-financing principle.

The people here are christians but the service consists of some idolatry rituals. The region has a different, unique ‘ethnographic and cultural micro-climate’ because of its location, unique architectural buildings, and non-touched environment that gives possibilities for its further development.

Chargali

The main branch of agriculture is cattle-farming. Here cows, sheep, poultry are bred. Chargali is a village in the mountains. The highlands are covered with plough-lands and pastures. The road should be repaired and  infrastructure should be arranged.
Chargali is first of all famous as a place of birth of Vaja Pshaveli, the greatest Georgian humanist and poet, founder of ecological cognition and moral. Even hundred years ago he wrete in his fiction that man is a part of nature and that man should not treat the nature as a consumer and exploiter because breach in interdependence harmony would produce undesirable effects. He also devoted wonderful works to the relations of communities and person. He viewed Caucasus as one common house where feud and contradiction should be overcome. He learned communal law and handed down to us wonderful works on ethnographic existence. As not many Vaja Phavela's works were translated into foreign languages, the world knows little of his doctrine that would never lose its value.
It is desirable to make eco-camp and summer school in Chargali so that the young generation would learn Vaja Phavela's works well. It is a direct way of learning ecological morale by teenagers. The effect will be more strengthened by the wonderful natural environment where these works were written.
